The Edit - Moodymanc

Words by

We sit down with Moodymanc to quiz him about music, travel and all things in between.

An introduction, please … who are you, where are you, and what pays the bills?

I’m Danny Ward. I’m a jazz musician, record producer and collector, DJ and artist from Manchester, UK. I make records under various names but perhaps most predominantly “Dubble D” and “Moodymanc”, and I run a small label, “Well Cut Records” to release my own projects and collaborations.

Where was the mix recorded, and what is the inspiration behind it?

The mix was recorded here in my studio at home. To be absolutely honest I had a look at pictures of your clothing line and really liked the colours and patterns and use of organic imagery and textures so I went through a lot of the new music I’ve been finding recently and tried to find an appropriate spectrum!

Strictly vinyl? Strictly digital? Couldn’t care less?

Strictly music. I buy both, I play both. I love both. I have a deep and long standing love affair with records though and have stuck my neck on the line career wise to stick to releasing on that format as much as I can.

‘Balearic’, seems to be a somewhat overused term these days, but if you had to – and we are asking you to - describe the essence of ‘Balearic’ in one record?

Ha! No! ☺

Favourite place you’ve travelled to? And why?

I enjoy travelling and playing in South East Asia. For one I get booked a lot there (which helps!) and people are very supportive, but I also like the culture, climate the food and the general feeling of positivity.

Sunset or Sunrise? And the best place to experience it?

I like playing both, and do get to. I enjoy a very broad spectrum of music and collect and sift through a lot of it so I really strive to ‘play the room’ (or beach) in any situation or at any time.

The most you’ve ever spent on one record that you’re willing to tell us? Or the best bargain bin finds you’ve digged out over the years, which you’re happy to brag about?

I did a series of three releases on ‘Well Cut Records’ with officially the most expensive design and artwork that the distributors had ever dealt with. Each one cost a small fortune! In terms of buying them I honestly don’t know as I tend to buy a few in one go and haggle down…nothing too crazy but there have been the odd ones that might have cost up the three figure mark… generally Brazilian or Jazz records.

Favourite DJ you’ve heard play out over the years?

That changes all the time to be honest, and some of the best nights I’ve had have been at house parties when my mates here in Manchester have been playing for each other. One DJ who really flipped me out consistently was Jeff Mills though. I used to be part of a project called ‘2020 soundsystem’ and we played together quite a lot on festival dates. I was always mesmerized.

Anything else we should know about you or what you are up to …

Feel free to come find me on Facebook, Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Twitter or Instagram and I’ll tell you all about it ☺ x
