Ahead of the launch of our Artist Series collaboration, we sat down for a chat with Cologne based digital artist, Thomas Heinz.
How long have you been doing what you do, and what got you started in this field?
I first did an apprenticeship as a carpenter, then I studied design and art, and since then I have been involved in art, design, illustration and animation. I have only been working specifically with pattern design since 2018.
How would you describe your illustration style? What elements or themes do you often incorporate?
Clear, bold and playful. I like to give things eyes and bring them to life.
Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you go from an idea to a finished piece?
I always try to work on a theme in a playful way, by sketching and drawing or using other techniques.
Who or what are your biggest inspirations as an illustrator? Are there any artists, visual or otherwise, that have significantly influenced your work?
There are hundreds of artists and designers who interest me and whose shoulders I stand on. At the moment I'm particularly interested in the work of Phyllida Barlow, who sadly passed away two years ago.

Of all the illustrations you've created, do you have a favourite piece? What makes it special to you?
I usually like the illustration that I have just finished the most.
What can you tell us about the shirts you’ve made with Far Afield?
I like it when the patterns I make are elegant but also humorous. I hope I have achieved this with the two designs for FAR AFIELD. I could also imagine the two designs in other colour combinations.
How would you describe your personal style/relationship with clothing and fashion?
Simple but not too serious.
What are your top picks for things to do, places to eat, or hidden gems in your city? Any recommendations for visitors?
There is a very good and friendly French bakery called Boulangerie Merlet in Cologne. You can also have a coffee here and enjoy small treats. And there is a very good small restaurant with many small appetisers called Wallczka – friendly people and a nice atmosphere.
Are there any upcoming projects you're particularly excited about? What does the future hold?
Yes, I'm currently working on an ornament for a steel bridge, which is very exciting and it's great fun to work with architects. I hope I can continue to work with lots of interesting people on different projects in the future, that would be great.
